narrative of Levi Coffin, a Quaker and key leader of the
Underground Railroad. Coffin's home in Newport, Indiana was known as
the
"Grand Central Station" of the Underground Railroad during the period
leading up to 1865. He, his family, and other abolitionists secretly
helped thousands
of slaves to escape from the South using secret routes and safe houses.
